Julian Barret: She never feels herself to be more that anyone

Yes! This site is alive! Eh--- ahem. We have a nice fragment of an interview for you.

Julian Barret worked with Tarja recording 3 songs for her latest album and then joined her for her Latin American What Lies Beneath tour in March, 2011. The website Tarja Argentina had the chance to conduct a lengthy interview with the guitar player and guess what? He certainly had LOTS to say about the soprano. Why don't you join us in the gossip? ;)

The question that we ask everybody... what is your opinion about Tarja as an artist and as a person?

As an artist, truth is, and this is something that I always say in the interviews, it's very crazy what happened to me. I mean, it's very weird, I didn't know all of Tarja's career or Nightwish's. It's very weird because I started working with Adrian Barilari, and a some time later Adrian played at the Luna Park, four months later since I started working with him, and he plays in The Luna Park with Rata Blanca

That was when he played with Tarja...

And you know, I told him "Hey, can you give me a ticket? I want to go see you with Rata Blanca!" and he told me "Yeah!". I practically didn't know Tarja, I knew she was going to be there. And something very crazy happened to me... when she came to the stage y had a very weird sensation. I mean, she came out and I had goosebumps. I said "wow!". This woman has such a control over the stage!

She has a lot of presence on stage...

The presence! I don't mean to demerit the musicians or Rata Blanca, but when she came out, [the venue] exploded and I said "Wow!" I was left so impressed with that, so much that I thought [...] "Wow!", I mean, Why hadn't I listened to this singer before? I immediately listened to "Once", from which I had already listened to some guitar riff and it blew my mind. I listened to "Once" for, let's say, 3, 4 weeks in a row, and that was the only thing I listened. I listened to it once and again, it was very crazy, but I swear that I thought "Wow, it must be awesome working with her (laughter)". It was so weird, maybe some people will believe me, and some won't. I said "My dream is to play with this girl."

I downloaded "My Winter Storm" and it also blew my mind. I said "Wow". The first time that I listened to it I liked it, the second time I liked it more, and the third time I said "Wow, this is a super album", and, I swear that's what I thought, I don't know, it's so crazy, but in October they told me "In a month you'll work with Tarja Turunen" and I wasn't even getting it. I should have asked for world peace! (laughter) Of course! I have super powers! I'll ask for more yet!

It was so crazy,[...] I had her idealized until when she came, we greeted each other and started working, and then I became more down to earth about her and I didn't look at her that way any more. At the beginning it was this potent energy to be next to her and say "Wow, I'm working with Tarja Turunen," That I used to think when I had her next to me. And then, well, I got used to it and then a trust was born. And now, for example I was working with Tarja here at home, we were working on new themes [...]. I'm already comfortable with her.

How to answer your question: I met her as an artist before knowing that I would work with her some day, [...] When she appeared in the scenario with Rata Blanca I said "Wow!" I got goosebumps. She started singing and I said "Wow, This is supreme!" As an artist, she is just the best.

And as a person, she is so... I mean, I already worked with her for a year and a half, and went on tour for a month with her and I can perfectly tell you that she is awesome, in no moment she feels to be more than any of her musicians or anything, even if she is more popular and all of that. She never feels herself to be more that anyone, we're all equal, even I felt that with everyone. Because for them who was I? Nobody, absolutely nobody beyond of how little known I am here [...]No one was more important than the others. Of course there are no special treatments. [...]

--- Then, he adds:  ---

Tarja Turunen is Tarja Turunen, she is a number one artists in many parts of the world [...] and she still works hard and practices and studies. The other time she told me that her teacher went to see her to the Luna Park, her teacher is...

Marta Blanco (The interviewer provides -don't forget to check our interview with Mrs. Blanco!)

Yeah, she told me "My teacher came to see me" and she wanted to... imagine! She still feels the pressure to impress her teacher! I say, What else do you have to do when you already bask in your success and nothing else matters? You don't enjoy anything! And she still, at this height [of her career] and being who she is, still feels the need to impress her teacher, and Tarja is a professional. I hope I won't lose that either.
