Karina Varela: Classical singing lessons with Tarja

Karina Varela, singer of the Argentinian band Dominus Inferi, was interviewed for the website En Vivo en Buenos Aires and she talked about how it was to work with Tarja.





Interviewer: Karina, you had the chance to study classical singing with Tarja Turunen, what can you tell us about this?

Karina: That it was an amazing experience, both in the technical and human aspect.

Tarja is a very special person strictly talking from a didactic point of view. Beyond the myth she transmits, and she transmits it with her body, her soul, with her smile, with her voice, with her hands, with everything. Her classes (in spite of being new to it when she started giving them) were worthy to be labeled as superior compared to other great masters (without the intention to offend anybody) that she had in the formal education of my country.

She used a lot of examples, her exercises, her individual appraisals for each student, her notes, everything is useful, everything is very wide, comprehensive, concise. On every lesson from her you could learn from excercises to tone your intercostal muscles to secrets for singing even if you had a cold and had to sing anyway!!!!

It was really worth it to be able to enjoy such an honor because those were months where I could absorb lots of content and material which in another way I would have needed much more time for it. She gave me lessons that I'm still using today without doubt and everytime I do it, I can confirm that the vocal health of her techniques allows me to keep mine intact, despite the passing of time and the physical state that often are not the best ones due to health, the acoustic conditions of the place where you sing, etc. Without a doubt I can say that those were the best classes I ever took in those ten years since I dedicate myself to music.

Karina Varela, cantante de la banda argentina Dominus Inferi, fue entrevistada para la página web En Vivo en Buenos Aires y habló sobre la experiencia de trabajar con Tarja.


Karina, vos tuviste la posibilidad de estudiar canto lírico con Tarja Turunen, ¿qué nos podés contar al respecto?

Karina: Que ha sido una hermosísima experiencia técnica y humana. Tarja es una persona muy especial desde lo didáctico estrictamente hablando. Más allá del mito ella transmite, y transmite con el cuerpo, con el alma, con la sonrisa, con la voz, con las manos, con todo. Sus clases (a pesar de que era una novata en ello cuando las comenzó a dar) han sido dignas de calificarlas como muy superiores a otros grandes maestros (sin ánimo de ofender a nadie) que he tenido en la educación formal de mi país. Ella era muy ejemplificadora, sus ejercicios, sus acotaciones individuales para cada alumno, sus apuntes, todo sirve, todo es muy amplio, exhaustivo, conciso. En cada clase de ella podías aprender desde ejercicios para tonificar músculos costales hasta secretos para salir de un apuro si estabas congestionada y tenías que cantar de todas formas!!!! Realmente valió la pena poder gozar de semejante honor porque fueron unos meses donde pude absorver una cantidad enorme de contenidos y material que por otra vía seguramente hubiera tardado mucho más. Ella me ha dejado enseñanzas que sigo aplicando hoy en día sin duda alguna y que cada vez que lo hago puedo comprobar que la salud vocal de sus técnicas me permite mantener la mía intacta pese al paso del tiempo o de los estados físicos que a veces no son los óptimos por razones de salud, condiciones ambientales del lugar donde se canta, etc. Sin duda alguna puedo decir que han sido las mejores clases que he tomado en los diez años que me dedico a la música.

Reporter: Karina, ai avut şansa să studiezi interpretarea muzicii clasice alături de Tarja Turunen, ce ne poţi spune despre asta?

Karina: A fost o experienţă extraordinară, atât pe plan tehnic, cât şi uman.
Tarja este o persoană foarte specială, vorbind strict din punct de vedere profesional. Mai presus de mitul pe care îl transmite, şi îl transmite cu trupul ei, cu sufletul ei, cu zâmbetul, cu vocea, cu mâinile ei, cu totul. Orele predate de ea (deşi era încă nouă în domeniu când a început să le dea) merită să fie catalogate ca superioare în comparaţie cu cele ale altor mari profesori (fără intenţia de a jigni pe nimeni) pe care îi avusesem înainte în ţara mea.
Folosea o mulţime de exemple, iar exerciţiile sale, evaluările individuale pentru fiecare student, notiţele sale, totul este folositor, pe larg, cuprinzător şi concis. La fiecare lecţie puteai să înveţi de la exerciţii cum să îţi tonifiezi muşchii intercostali, la secrete pentru a putea să fii capabil să cânţi chiar şi când eşti răcit!!
Chiar a meritat să pot să mă bucur de o astfel de onoare pentru că în acele luni am putut absorbi foarte mult material, care în alte circumstanţe mi-ar fi luat mult mai mult timp. Mi-a predat lecţii pe care le folosesc şi azi cu toată încrederea şi, de fiecare dată când o fac, pot să afirm că sănătatea vocală a tehnicilor sale mă ajută să mi-o menţin pe a mea intactă, în pofida trecerii timpului şi a stării fizice, care nu este întotdeauna cea mai bună, din cauza sănătăţii, a acusticii locului în care cânţi, etc.
Fără îndoială pot să afirm că acestea au fost cele mai bune lecţii pe care le-am luat în cei 10 ani de când mă dedic muzicii.
